Afghanistan

''Everywhere you go in Afghanistan, you're held in a handful of mountains.

As you travel,there always comes a moment when you have rounded the rim of one mountain and suddenly there you're in a sweep of different mountains.

The horizon is always close at hand. So in Afghanistan,for a distant view ,men have had to look up.

The moon has therefore fascinated Afghans.Today we know what the moon is really like,and it is like Afghanistan.

Here is the same un-changed and un-giving surface,marked by peaks and grooves.

In the mountain peaks of Afghanistan,all is brown,gray, lightened in some places by an impersonal sun, in others deepened by the shadows of jagged peaks descending in a relentless ravine''. And that is my beloved country.

The coming of winter

When Libra travels from the sun, then does winter come.

The world, once weak with summer's heat, grows stong again;
Man eats with joy and finds the taste of water sweet;
Lovers embrace again, arms and lips entwined.

The warrior welcomes now his coat; the horse, his winter trappings;
The one feels not his armor; nor the other his saddle's weight.
From SWAT the falcon now returns, like traveled yogi coming home;
And in the radiant moonlight hours comes the heron screaming in the sky.
